CATFISH – Opens 1/4/2013

Catfish, located at 1433 Bedford (Crown Heights for sure) is open today. I haven’t had the food but heading over there now. The decor is fabulous and the bar looks great.
Menu is small but it has something for everyone.
AND for the sports people – they have a few TV’s tastefully above the bar. Nothing intrusive, but nice to have….. for superbowl.
Just one more reason to live in Crown Heights.

We are getting more and more and better coffee choices. I LOVE the deli coffee for 50 cents. It is really hard to beat that, but, if you are looking for a purer form try the following:

great eggs and biscuits, pastries, salads, soups

Bush Baby – Fulton and Franklin

Some fabulous amazing restaurants pop up in obscure places and with little signage. One of the best – open for over 1 year now is:

Thirstbaravan

Classon and Pacific.

Magnificent tastes of food and wonderful organic wine (I miss my whiskey but can survive)

The portions are not huge, but the tastes are so big you are satisfied and then some.

Fabulous Views

Prospect Heights and Crown Heights is known for it’s views of the city…… or should be. From the 3rd floor window of my previous apartment I had an Amazing view of the city (Atlantic and Nostrand).

From another building, 4th floor and up, has wonderful views of Manhattan, you can watch the progress on the Freedom Tower and much more.

I currently have a listing with a fabulous view AND a balcony. 2 bedroom, elevator building, rent stabilized.

Williamsburg Italian

I used to work in Williamsburg a lot, and frequented a Wonderful Italian restaurant the is priced very well and service is wonderful.

La Piazetta – at 442 Graham, a couple of blocks north of the Graham L.

Get the mixed anit-pasto plate – cold and make sure they put vegetables. It was usually all I ate, for $6 and perfect for a lunch that tasted great and healthy – it usually also has meat and cheese, plus you get bread.

Their brunch is a great deal also.

It sometimes is completely empty and then around 3:00 or 9:00pm the old-school neighborhood crowd comes around.

There is also a great old style butcher across the street.

Wonderful Franklin Ave – FOOD

Franklin Ave keeps getting better and better and hipper and busier and……..
New restaurant that just opened – Pizza for our better nights – Barboncio at Franklin and St Johns – wonderful atmosphere, another great addition to the strip.

Others that aren’t so NEW – restaurants:

Franklin Park – St Johns – the original Fabulous Bar on the Avenue
Dutch Boy Burger – St Johns – linked to Franklin Park – Wonderful burgers
Chevella’s – Sterling Pl – we all know the amazing mexican food
Franklin Road House – Prospect Pl – great hang out and burgers and pizza priced well
Slice of Brooklyn Pizza – Prospect Pl – original pizza in the neighborhood (well 3 years ago) and very good staple
Bombay Masala – Prospect Pl – original Indian (3 years and counting) Very good and great atmosphere
Sushi Tatsu II – Dean – Sushi and Tai, wonderful Tai and great Sushi, fabulous delivery
Guero’s Brooklyn – Prospect Pl – Great taco’s including breakfast tacos and to-go Margarita’s

Crown Heights North – Food for beginners

Having been here for 5 years AND since I love to try new food, I have hit a few of the local places. They were a bit intimidating because I didn’t know what certain things were: double, roti, oxtail soup. I also found friends of mine that had been in the neighborhood for 3 months, were still going to Williamsburg (on a scooter) for lunch because the ‘falafel guy’ there was cheap and yet they had never tried what is right around the corner…… for cheap.

Here are some helpful suggestions
1) a double – its $1 and is very filling. My suggestion is to try it without the extra sauces because the sauces can disguise the real flavor. Then try tamarind sauce, mango sauce, hot sauce.
2) potato pie with vegetables – $2.50 – very filling and has fresh sauteed vegetables in it.
3) roti – $5 and up – it’s huge and I can’t finish it AND I eat it with a fork.
4) vegetable soup – thick and wonderful!!!!!

Breakfast is NOT eggs. Chopped fish on bread, so very healthy and wonderful.

There are lots of vegetarian options at all of the restaurants and fabulous vegetables.

My favorite is the Royal on Nostrand between Pacific and Dean and Melanie’s on the corner of Fulton and Nostrand.
